Animal Taming¶
Tame and control wild creatures as loyal pets.
Overview¶
Animal Taming allows you to befriend wild creatures and command them in combat. One of the most powerful and versatile skills in the game, enabling unique playstyles centered around pet companions.
Active Use¶
When you actively use the Animal Taming skill:
- Target Range: 6 tiles
- Targeting Timeout: 30 seconds (if you don't select a target)
- Actual Cooldown: None - you can attempt again immediately after success or failure
- Process: Reveals you and starts a taming attempt with 3-4 attempts (random) at 3-second intervals
- Initial Message: "Tame which animal?" when initiating
Taming Requirements¶
Before you can attempt to tame a creature:
- Minimum Skill: Must have at least the creature's
MinTameSkillor you'll be told "You have no chance of taming this creature." - Already Owned: Creatures with too many previous owners (max varies) cannot be retamed
- Gender Requirements: Some creatures can only be tamed by males or females
- Race Requirements: Cu Sidhe can only be tamed by Elves
- Control Slots: Must have enough follower slots available
- Subduing: Some creatures must be subdued (reduced to < 10% HP) before taming
- Line of Sight: Must maintain clear path and vision during taming
- Range: Must stay within 6 tiles during the entire taming process
- Damage: If the creature takes damage during taming, the attempt fails
Taming Success Formula¶
Success is determined by checking Animal Taming skill against:
minSkill = creature.MinTameSkill + (creature.Owners.Count * 6.0) + 24.9
Skill check: minSkill - 25.0 to minSkill + 25.0
- First Time Taming: Base difficulty from creature's MinTameSkill
- Retaming: Difficulty increases by 6.0 per previous owner
- Already Owned: If you previously owned the creature, taming automatically succeeds
Anger Chance¶
When attempting to tame, there's a 95% chance the creature will:
- Display: "You seem to anger the beast!"
- Attack you (unless you have Honor virtue active)
- Break any barding pacification (75% chance to re-pacify after 2 seconds)
Animal Lore Gains¶
During the taming process (each 3-second interval), you passively check Animal Lore for skill gain if you don't already own the creature.
Effects¶

Training¶
Skill Gain¶
- Gains occur on successful taming attempts
- Difficulty-based: Taming creatures near your skill level gives best gains
