Dueling¶
The dueling pits sit in the Dawn Event Center, beside the Capture the Flag sign-up. Fight a friend, settle a grudge with a rival, climb the monthly ladder or win the Saturday Cup.
Nothing is lost in the pits. Reagents, potions, bandages and arrows are free, your gear doesn't wear, and nobody dies: a killing blow knocks you out of the fight instead.
Getting started¶
Type [Duel anywhere, or double-click the Dueling Signup Board in the Dawn Event Center. The board has five pages:
- Challenges: duels waiting for an opponent. Click one to accept it
- Post a Duel: set up your own challenge
- Ladder: this season's ranked standings
- My Record: your rating, your totals and your last 10 matches
- Cup: the next Saturday Cup, sign-ups and standings
The Dawn Event Center can be reached from any public moongate by picking the upper right option.
Gorn, the Duel Announcer¶
Gorn stands among the pits and calls every fight: who steps into which pit, knockouts, rounds, sudden death, upsets and win streaks. He hosts the Saturday Cup too. Double-click him, or say duel, ladder, cup or record near him, to open the board.
Posting and accepting a duel¶
You can post and accept duels from anywhere. Once a duel is accepted, everyone has two minutes to reach Dawn. The fight begins as soon as all of you are there and a pit of the right size is free.
When you post a duel, you choose:
| Option | Choices |
|---|---|
| Kind | Casual or Ranked |
| Format | 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 (casual only) |
| Time limit | 5, 10 or 15 minutes (casual only) |
| Rounds | Best of 1 or best of 3 (casual only) |
| Open to | Anyone, your guild, or one rival you pick |
- For 2v2 and 3v3, your party is your team and must be exactly the right size. Whoever accepts brings their own party of the same size
- Ranked duels always use the house rules: 1v1, 10 minutes, best of 1. Ranked needs an account linked to Discord
- A challenge stays up for 30 minutes, or until you log out
- When you post a challenge, players in Dawn and anyone who has dueled before get a message. Turn these alerts off with
[DuelAlerts
After every duel, both sides are offered a rematch with the same rules. It starts if everyone accepts within 30 seconds.
Who can duel¶
- Young players can't duel
- Criminals can't duel. Murderers can
- You can't join a duel within two minutes of fighting another player
- No pets or summons. Stable or release your followers first. Ethereal mounts are dismounted for you
- You can't duel while you're in a Capture the Flag or Conquest match, or signed up for one
- Two characters belonging to the same person can never be matched against each other, or put on the same team
Rules in the pit¶
- You can only harm your opponents and only help your teammates. Nobody outside the pit can interfere, and you can't harm anyone outside it
- Teammates show green and opponents show orange
- Recall, Mark, Gate Travel, Teleport, Invisibility and summoning spells are blocked, and so are Hiding and Stealth
- No skill gains
- Knockouts: when you take a killing blow, you are knocked out and moved to the edge of the pit to watch. There is no corpse and nothing to loot, and it doesn't count as a kill for murder counts, fame, factions, guild wars or PvP achievements
- Leaving: walking out of the pit or disconnecting forfeits. In a team match, only you are out
- Best of 3: after each round, everyone is restored and the next round starts from the spawn points
Sudden death¶
When the time limit runs out, sudden death begins:
- Healing and curing stop working
- Everyone is revealed
- Every 15 seconds, each fighter loses 5% of their maximum health
If nobody has fallen after 5 more minutes, the side with the larger share of its health left wins the round. An exact tie is a draw.
Ranked ladder¶
Only ranked 1v1 duels count toward your rating.
- Everyone starts at 1200. Your first 10 ranked duels move your rating faster while it settles
- Beating a higher-rated player is worth more than beating a lower-rated one
- Repeat opponents count for less. A second ranked duel against the same person within 24 hours counts for half, and a third for a quarter. After 3 ranked duels against the same person in a week, more duels against them don't count at all
Monthly seasons¶
Each calendar month (Central Time) is a season. To place, play at least 3 ranked duels against at least 2 different people.
When the month ends, the top three win:
| Place | Title | War Tokens | Trophy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Season N Pit Champion | 1,000 | Gold |
| 2nd | Season N Pit Runner-Up | 600 | Silver |
| 3rd | Season N Pit Contender | 400 | Bronze |
Each person can place only once, however many characters they play. At the end of the season, every rating moves halfway back toward 1200, so everyone has a fresh run at the next one.
The ladder is posted to Discord every Monday, and the final standings when the season ends.
War Tokens¶
Ranked duels pay War Tokens whether you win or lose:
- Win: 25 War Tokens
- Loss: 15 War Tokens
- First ranked win of the day: +25 War Tokens
- You can earn up to 500 War Tokens a week from ranked duels. The week starts on Monday (Central Time)
- Repeat duels against the same person pay less, in the same way they count less for rating
- Casual duels don't pay War Tokens
Cup and season prizes don't count toward the weekly cap. Spend your tokens at the War Tokens Store.
The Saturday Cup¶
Every Saturday at 8:00 PM Central, the pits hold a cup.
- Sign-ups open 30 minutes before it starts. Sign up on the board's Cup page or with
[DuelCup join, and leave with[DuelCup leave - Be in Dawn when the cup starts, or you'll be dropped
- The cup needs at least 4 duelists
- One entry per person
The format alternates each week:
- 1v1 Cup: ranked duels that count for the ladder
- Shuffle Cup: sign up alone and play on a new random team every round, mostly 2v2. Teams are balanced by rating and kept away from repeat teammates where possible. With 12 or more entrants it moves to 3v3
With 6 or fewer entrants, everyone plays everyone. With more, the cup plays up to 4 rounds, pairing players with similar scores who haven't met yet. A win scores 1. A draw, or sitting out a Shuffle round, scores half. A bye in a 1v1 cup counts as a win.
Cup prizes¶
- Finishing the cup: 50 War Tokens
- Top three: another 300, 200 or 100 War Tokens, plus a gold, silver or bronze trophy
- Winner: the title Reigning Cup Champion until the next cup is won
If you leave the cup, disconnect, or miss a match, you're out and don't get a prize.
