Dungeon Treasure Chests

Locked, trapped chests spawn throughout Britannia's dungeons. Pick the lock with Lockpicking, disarm the trap with Remove Trap, and claim gold, gems, scrolls, magic gear and, if you're lucky, the dungeon's own dye material.

Chest levels

Level Lockpicking needed Trap Gold Gems
1 57 Dart 30 - 129 Sometimes, small
2 72 Explosion 70 - 169 Sometimes
3 84 Poison 400 - 700 Always, 1-2 stacks
4 92 Explosion 700 - 1200 Always, 1-3 large stacks

If your skill is too low, you'll see "You don't see how that lock can be manipulated."

Higher-level chests also hold reagents, scrolls, potions, wands, and magic weapons and armor. Level 4 chests carry the strongest magic equipment.

Telling chests apart

Level 1 chests are always crates. Barrels only appear at level 2, and kegs at level 2 or 4. A dart trap means level 1, a poison trap means level 3.

The trap goes off when you open the chest after unlocking it, not while you pick it.

Respawns

  • Once a chest is unlocked, by Lockpicking or magic, it breaks apart after 5 minutes so a fresh chest can spawn in its place
  • Anything left inside spills onto the ground, where it decays like any other dropped item

The Unlock spell only works on level 1 and level 2 chests.

Dungeon dye material

Dungeon treasure chests (level 2 and up) have a chance to contain the dye material of the dungeon they're found in.

  • Higher-level chests have a better chance and contain larger stacks
  • Chests in the current Dungeon of the Week get a second chance at dye material
  • Chests disarmed with Remove Trap before being picked have better odds
  • Dye material only appears when the lock is picked with Lockpicking. Magically unlocked chests won't contain it

Masterwork chests

Some level 4 chests spawn with a masterwork lock. Single-click a chest and look for [masterwork lock].

  • Masterwork locks need 95.0 Lockpicking to attempt
  • They hold far more gold and extra magic equipment
  • They have the best odds at larger stacks of dungeon dye material, and the best odds at a hidden compartment

Hidden compartments

Grandmaster lockpickers (100.0) have a small chance to find a hidden compartment when picking a level 4 dungeon chest. Masterwork chests have the best odds.

The find goes straight into your backpack. Hidden compartments hold rare items found nowhere else, including:

  • A coffer for each dungeon, in that dungeon's own color
  • A sturdy quicksilver lockpick that rarely breaks
  • A gunmetal lantern
  • And stranger things still
Dungeon Coffer
Covetous Aurum gold coffer
Deceit Phantom gray coffer
Despise Envy green coffer
Destard Dragon's scale red coffer
Fire Inferno orange coffer
Hythloth Abyssal black coffer
Ice Glacial blue coffer
Shame Forlorn violet coffer
Terathan Keep Dusty rose coffer
Wrong Judgment blue coffer

Your first find earns the Safecracker achievement and title.

Traps

Disarming a chest's trap with Remove Trap lets you salvage part of the mechanism:

Chest Salvage
Level 1 Crossbow bolts
Level 2 Lesser explosion potion
Level 3 Poison potion
Level 4 Explosion potion
Masterwork level 4 Greater explosion potion
  • Chests disarmed before being picked (level 2 and up) hold an extra stack of gems and have better odds at dungeon dye material
  • A trap disarmed by a Grandmaster (100.0 Remove Trap) doubles the chance of finding a hidden compartment when that chest is picked
  • The Magic Untrap spell doesn't work on dungeon chest traps, so it gives none of these bonuses

Bring a partner

Disarm first, then pick. A trapper and a lockpicker make a good team.

Level 4 traps

  • Explosion traps on level 4 chests deal at most 96 fire damage, so they can no longer kill most characters outright. Anyone within 3 tiles is caught in the blast
  • A GM Remove Trap can always attempt to disarm a level 4 chest trap, though the strongest traps can still fail
